The Importance of Preventative Maintenance for Your Air Conditioning — At Home and in Business

Whether it’s keeping your family cool through the steamy Northern Rivers summers or ensuring your workplace stays comfortable year-round, air conditioning is a modern essential. But like any hardworking machine, your air conditioning system needs regular care to keep it running at its best. That’s where preventative maintenance comes in — and why it’s a service every homeowner and business owner should prioritise.
At Grafton Air, we proudly provide professional, reliable air conditioning maintenance services throughout the entire Clarence Valley, including Grafton, Yamba, Iluka, Maclean, Gulmarrad, Brooms Head, Wooli, and all surrounding suburbs.
What is Preventative Maintenance?
Preventative maintenance means routinely inspecting, cleaning, testing, and tuning your air conditioning system to ensure it operates efficiently and reliably — before problems arise.
Our skilled technicians carry out a thorough service, which typically includes:
- Cleaning or replacing air filters
- Checking refrigerant levels and topping up if required
- Cleaning condenser and evaporator coils
- Inspecting electrical connections and components
- Testing airflow and system performance
- Ensuring thermostats are calibrated correctly
- Checking ductwork and insulation (for ducted systems)
By regularly maintaining your air conditioning system, you can avoid costly repairs and ensure it runs smoothly for years to come.
Why Preventative Maintenance Matters — For Homes and Businesses
1. Lower Energy Bills
A well-maintained system doesn’t have to work as hard to cool or heat your space. Dirty filters, clogged coils, and low refrigerant levels reduce efficiency and drive up energy costs. Routine maintenance keeps your system running at peak efficiency — saving you money month after month.
2. Extended System Lifespan
Air conditioners are significant investments. Regular servicing can prolong the life of your system by catching minor issues early, preventing unnecessary wear and tear, and reducing the risk of major component failures.
3. Fewer Breakdowns and Repairs
Nothing’s worse than an AC failure during a heatwave or busy trading hours. Preventative maintenance helps spot and fix small problems before they cause unexpected breakdowns and costly emergency repairs.
4. Better Air Quality
Clean filters and coils mean cleaner, fresher air flowing through your home or business. Routine servicing helps reduce dust, mould, bacteria, and allergens in the air — promoting a healthier indoor environment for your family, staff, and customers.
5. Warranty Protection and Compliance
Many manufacturers require proof of regular servicing to keep warranties valid. For commercial premises, scheduled maintenance can also help meet workplace health and safety obligations — ensuring your systems are safe and compliant.

A split system air conditioner comprises two pieces: the outdoor unit, which sits outside your home, and the indoor unit, commonly wall-mounted inside the home.
Reverse cycle means the system can provide both heating and cooling. Multihead systems, ceiling cassettes, under ceiling units and cooling-only models are available.
The indoor and outdoor units are placed on opposite sides of the same wall. This reduces the amount of copper pipe run required to connect the two units. Every installation is different and we work from a site consultation or your
building plans to determine the best location for the units.
Ducted air conditioners are recommended if you wish to condition most areas in the home, split systems are not practicable, particularly a number of outdoor units, or you prefer the more discreet look of the outlet registers. The indoor fan coil unit is situated in the ceiling space and is connected to the outdoor condensing unit. Individual outlet registers are
situated in each room (generally in the ceiling)with the air conditioning controlled by a central controller pad.
Zoning allows you to turn on and off the air conditioning in certain areas of the house. This is done through the use of zone controls in the ductwork situated in the ceiling space. Control pads are wall mounted and can be simple or fully digital with an associated phone app.
An inverter system uses a variable speed compressor, which allows variation in the cooling or heating capacity of the air
conditioning to suit indoor conditions. Inverter units are more economical and efficient to operate. They are also quieter than fixed speed systems. Both ducted and split systems are available with inverter compressors, and the latest most efficient refrigerant gas.
This is determined by the size of the area, the aspect, whether the home is insulated, the amount of glass and the heat load generated from the number of people occupying the area.
Our team at Grafton Air Conditioning & Refrigeration can visit your home to correctly determine the exact size required, maximising efficiency and minimising energy costs. Thisis a free service.

Reverse cycle air conditioning is the most energy efficient method of heating and/or cooling your home or office. Operating costs are determined by how long the air-conditioning system is running and the size of the area to be conditioned. It is essential that the correct size unit is installed. An undersized unit will be significantly more expensive to run, taking longer to heat or cool the area effectively. See our energy saving tips for more information on keeping running costs to a minimum.
Most residential installations of a split system generally take 4-6 hours. The installation of a ducted system generally takes 1-2 days. We can arrange the installation at a time convenient to you. All installation work carries a 12-month warranty.
Regular maintenance sustains the efficiency of your system (good for your power bills), prolongs the life of your system and reduces the likelihood of any future breakdowns.
